When Torie first called me to schedule a portrait session with me, she told me that she and her son were actors and needed some new headshots. I wasn’t expecting to have such a blast with this lovely lady and her little man.

Isn’t he the cutest ever?

As we shot, I learned that he was in the process of directing a movie himself! Wow. Such talent.

Torie and I had a blast getting these shots done. She’s definitely all sass!

One of my favorite things about being a family portrait photographer is when I have wonderful clients like the Langs, who pretty much let me direct them to a non-traditional photo, even when it means climbing up on a rock with a dog that is elderly, staring into the sun, and having me take their picture while I try not to fall off a ledge. What fun is a family portrait without a sense of adventure?

This family is also a great example of why I enlisted the talents of Jennifer Spencer at FRESH to style all of my portrait clients this year. While it’s really easy to tell the family to wear black polos and denim, there is a better way to pull the look together so it coordinates without everyone being “matchy,” as I like to call it. Jennifer was able to use the red and black color pallet with all the members of the family without diminishing each person’s individual sense of style.

All too often, when I ask the question, “when was the last time you had a family portrait made?” most people have to think for a long time, before admitting that it’s been several years. If I’m going to be totally honest, the last time I had a really good professional portrait done with my daughter, she was 3 months old. She turned five in June. I know, shame on me.

So I love clients like Caitlin & Doug, who called me to update their family portrait hours after they got married. We met at Meridian Park in Lone Tree to update the family photos:

This crew had me rolling in the grass with how funny they were. I told them we should do an album cover pose. This is what I got.

We grabbed a few shots of Caitlin & Doug before they all headed off to dinner. This one, I think I’m going to put on the wall in my studio:

{fundraiser | Colorado MESA}

You all know by now that I love to raise money for charity. I love it even more when raising money for charity is for education. So I didn’t hesitate to say, “I’m in!” when John Bosley approached me to participate in a fundraiser for Colorado MESA. MESA stands for Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement and focuses on getting low income and underrepresented elementary, middle and high school kids into careers in math, science and engineering and they desperately need money for their program.

So John and his lovely wife Belinda brainstormed on how they could help. John decided that as photographers, we can put our talents to use and raise some money. John’s thought was that we use our senior portrait packages to raise money for this organization. I think it’s a brilliant idea.

Since I also do a lot of family portraiture, I would like to include a part of my profits from those sessions as well.

I was so excited for the arrival of baby Osgood this month! I photographed her family this fall and we all talked about how we couldn’t wait for her arrival this spring. When I first met her, my first thought was that she looks just like her big brother – the star of my CRAVE spread – and she is just as cute as he is.

At only two weeks old, I was amazed at how wide awake and alert she was. In fact, she was awake for all of our session, but I managed to get a few snaps of her resting her little newborn eyes.

Her mom and I were giggling at all the funny faces that she was making while I was trying to capture her – we got a kick out of some of them:

I also created a custom birth announcement* that coordinates with her room, which is decked out in pink and black.

It was such a joy to photograph this little girl — I know her big brother is going to be protecting the heck out of her. Congratulations Osgood family!

The non-monetary paycheck

A few years ago, I started shooting more portrait sessions after deciding that I was much more comfortable in the role of portrait artist than photojournalist. I was unsure about making the change because in school, I didn’t really like shooting people in posed environments. In fact, I HATED portraiture assignments.

I wish I could find the image right now (I will look for it again), because I know my description won’t do it justice, but the best commentary on this fact was a lighting assignment I did in college. The assignment: a portrait using a single lighting source. I may have been a ~~little~~ lot vocal about my lack of desire to do it.

My image was a picture of a guy holding an exposed lightbulb, closing his eyes and cringing from the light as if it were going to melt him. The comment from my instructor was, “this pose tells more about you as an artist than it does the subject. It communicates your disdain for the exercise very well.”

I also cursed the number of hours I spent in the darkroom burning in that damn lightbulb.

But I love that image. It does say a lot about me at the time, as well as my feelings about the subject (my now ex-husband).

Now that I have begun shooting portraits as a specialty, I love it. I have so much fun working with the clients, posing them, laughing with (and sometimes at) them, and having a great time getting the shots. I love how when I get an idea and express it, there are clients that surprise me by doing things like scaling a six foot wall…in heels.

My favorite part, though, is when someone feels less than confident, when they hate having their photo taken, when they think that there haven’t been very good portraits of them in the past, and I can give them the image where they say, “wow, I love this!”

Pulling together a powerful image that makes people feel proud of who they are is why I do what I do and why I love doing it.

{osgood | family}

I first met John & Jenn when their son was about 6 months old. Our kids are about 4 months apart, mine being the older of the two, but they became fast friends. It was nice to catch up with them again, and learn that they have a 2nd child (a girl!) on the way.

I haven’t seen them since moving to Arizona, but it was amazing to me how much their son has grown in such a short period of time. We did, however joke about the size of both our kids, since they both tend to fall in the 20-30th percentile for height & weight. Perhaps that’s why they get along!

We met up early on a crisp November morning at Eisenhower Park in DTC. Snow had just fallen, so little Avery was having a blast running all over, laughing maniacally about the snow. I wish I’d a recorder with me — that kid’s laugh is so hysterical and does nothing but make you smile and want to hug him.

Avery may be a spitting image of his dad, but don’t let that fool you. His heart belongs 100% to mommy.

I was so grateful to have the opportunity to photograph this family! I can’t wait for their little one to arrive so I can do some new portraits of the four of them!

I’m not sure if I love these photos so much because of how much I love this family or because they are so much a true representation of who the Boones are. Drew and Whitney are some of the most awesome people I have ever met, and their three kids are a kick in the pants.

I had so much fun spending an afternoon with them at Southglenn Mall, doing anything we could to get all three kiddos to give me a straight face simultaneously. There is a reason why Whitney sometimes refers to the kids as “the yahoos,” I’m pretty sure it’s because these kids are made of silly putty.

Alice, the oldest, is a character. Whether it’s her impromptu fashion shows, or her all-out cuteness, when she’s around, you’re guaranteed a few laughs.

Liam is in the middle, and the only boy. He’s a character all on his own. When I asked him to show me his muscles, this is what I got:

Mimi is the happy-go-lucky one of the bunch. This girl is all smiles, all the time. Even when she’s feeling miserable, you almost don’t notice a difference.

Drew and Whitney, as I said, are one amazing couple. I met them when I started attending Denver Community Church, where Drew is currently serving as an elder and Whitney steers the MOPS group. They’ve been married for 13 glorious years, and are still as in love as ever.

Whitney also works with her dad to run Living Legacy Today, a ministry that is about leaving your mark for future generations. Learn more about the status of the project here.

I let Alice man the camera for a minute, and the lighting and wind were just perfect enough that she captured this “model shot” of Whitney. Serendipity.

At the end of the session, they all had fun in the fountains at the mall. I think Liam had the most fun.

It was truly an honor to get to capture this family! I had so much fun and I love you guys!
